Lung cancer is also known as lung carcinoma, is a malignant tumor that can grow without control, in the lung tissues. In most cases, cancer spreads from the lungs to other parts of the body, such as the vertebrae, the breast and so on. This process is known as metastasis. The tumor that begins in the lung, also referred to as primary lung cancers are carcinomas. Lung cancer is one of the most critical and famous causes of cancer deaths, especially in America.
There are two main types of lung cancer, and these are squamous-cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. Some of the common signs and symptoms of cancer are a prolonged cough, that doesn’t resolve, even after using cough syrups. Others include hemoptysis, pain in the chest, hoarseness of voice, pain in the bone, headache and loss of weight. Lung cancer is mainly due to some lifestyle activities, such as smoking.
According to statistics, approximately 90% of lung cancer cases are due to smoking. The remaining 10% occur in non-smokers. However, lung cancer occurs mostly as a result of a combination of genetics and environmental factors. Some of the materials that could lead to the development of this tumor include exposure to radon gas, air pollution, and asbestos.
This disease can be diagnosed by using imaging techniques such as the CT scan. And chest radiographs. Diagnosis is usually confirmed by extracting some tissue from the lungs and performing a biopsy. Bronchoscopy can also be done. The prognosis of cancer isn’t good, in fact, most of the cases are not curable.
However, conventional treatments used for lung cancer are chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgical procedures. Those in the stem cell business are doing a lot of work in creating a stem-cell therapy for lung cancer.

However, the normalcy does not necessarily mitigate the anxiety surrounding the experience, according to Lung Cancer In America 2018, a national survey by Health Union, LLC of people impacted by the condition, including patients and caregivers.
Living with lung cancer is accompanied by a considerable level of anxiety, with 86 percent of respondents reporting at least a little bit of anxiety on any given day. However, what is often referred to as "scanxiety" – the anxiety, fear and worry associated with scans, specifically before the results are revealed – can exacerbate those feelings. Of those who experience scanxiety, three-quarters reported either "more" or "a lot more" anxiety around the time of scans than at other times.
The frequency of follow-up scans can also cause the scanxiety opportunities to pile up, with almost three-quarters of respondents getting scans either every three to four months or more frequently. Making matters worse, 57 percent said they need to wait two or more days to receive the results of their scans.
According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the second most common cancer for both men and women in the U.S., as well as the nation's leading cause of death from cancer. Grim statistics surrounding lung cancer have the potential to increase worry and scanxiety.

In a bid to reduce the rate of lung cancer, a University of Michigan and Veterans Affairs research team has developed a novel, personalized lung cancer screening tool that accounts for past asbestos exposure.
Previous occurrences showed that asbestos exposure is the best known primary cause of mesothelioma, but it also significantly increases the chance of developing lung cancer.
Identifying mesothelioma in its earliest stages, is the best way to treat it because it is most treatable in that stage. A new American Lung Association report finds that Maine has one of the highest rates of new cases of lung cancer in the U.S. The report also finds that those Mainers who do get lung cancer are slightly likelier than the national average to survive it for five years.
The report uses data from 2009-2013 and finds that Maine's incidence of lung cancer is just under 75 cases per 100,000 people, which is the sixth-worst rate in the country.
“We have known for a while that we have one of the higher incidence rates,” says American Lung Association Maine Public Policy Director Lance Boucher.
“There's a lot of risk factors that go into lung cancer, smoking rate being one of them, and radon gas exposure, both of which are prevalent in Maine.”
Radon occurs naturally in Maine, and is the second-leading cause of lung cancer. Tobacco use is the leading risk factor for lung cancer, and Mainers do have high smoking rates. But Boucher says the numbers suggest Mainers may also have high exposures to other risk factors, like air pollution in coastal counties.
“Wind patterns and the coastal conditions in Maine, we are the tailpipe of the Northeast,” says Boucher.
“And a lot of the pollution from Midwest coal plants gets trapped here and results in Mainers having unhealthy air days.”
The report also finds that fewer Mainers are diagnosed in the early, more treatable stage of the cancer, than the national average. It predicts that more than 900 people will die from the disease this year.

According to a study which was presented recently at the annual meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, held from April 28 to May 1 in San Diego, patients with advanced lung cancer have increased incidence of suicide, which is reduced in association with receipt of palliative care,
Donald R. Sullivan, M.D., from the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, and colleagues examined advanced stage lung cancer patients in the Veteran Affairs (VA) Healthcare System to estimate the incidence of suicide. The correlation between palliative care and suicide as cause of death was also examined.According to the researchers, 87 percent of the 20,900 lung cancer patients had lung cancer as the cause of death. Other cancers, heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were other common causes of death.
Thirty deaths were due to suicide, with an overall rate of suicide of 200/100,000 patient years. Compared with the overall age, sex, and year adjusted rate of suicide among veterans who use VA health care, this rate represented a five-fold increase (37.5/100,000 patient years). Only 20 percent of the patients who died by suicide had a palliative care encounter, compared with 57 percent among lung cancer patients whose cause of death was not suicide.
This shows that palliative care encounter correlated with reduced odds of death from suicide (odds ratio, 0.18)."
The risk of suicide is underappreciated among cancer patients, especially those with advanced stage disease," Sullivan said in a statement.
"This study shows another potential benefit of palliative care among lung cancer patients."
Lung nodules are a diagnostic challenge in the United States with an estimated yearly incidence of 1.6 million. There are significant costs, morbidity and mortality associated with the invasive biopsies needed to determine which nodules are cancerous.
“Integrated Diagnostics pioneered the liquid biopsy approach to lung nodules based on proteomic (protein) analyses of blood plasma samples from hundreds of patients with nodules,” stated CEO Dr. Albert Luderer. “This research resulted in the discovery of several lung cancer-associated changes in a patient’s plasma proteome.”
The original findings were published in Science Translational Medicine and the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, and collectively demonstrated that specific protein changes could be detected in early stage lung cancer and utilized to exclude cancer in patients with benign nodules.
The newly clinical validation represents the performance of the second generation diagnostic test of Integrated Diagnostic’s original published work and is termed Xpresys Lung 2 (‘XL2’). The validation study confirmed the high accuracy of XL2 in identifying benign nodules in patients with a pretest probability of malignancy of 50% and less.
According to Co-authors Paul Kearney, PhD and Steven Springmeyer, MD, “to establish a high level of evidence, we conducted two prospective studies, one for discovery and the other for validation, that focused only on Stage 1A lung nodules. This is incredibly important as these are the lung nodules that are the hardest to assess. We integrated clinical risk factors and found that the proteomic signal was additive to the clinical risk factors. So in a real sense, XL2 is providing physicians with a molecular insight that they have never had before.”
“The outcomes of the PANOPTIC prospective, multi-center, observational trial are significant as they validate a new approach leveraging the proteome –– to accurately distinguish between benign and malignant nodules to rule out early stage lung cancer,” added senior author Dr. Peter Mazzone, MD, MPH, Cleveland Clinic, Director of the Lung Cancer Program and Lung Cancer Screening Program for the Respiratory Institute.
“Through this large-scale research, we have shown that this may provide the needed objective assessment of lung nodules to better determine the best treatment path forward, which could reduce or avoid invasive biopsy or surgery procedures and create improved patient outcomes.”
Physical exercise and measures of fitness, such as endurance and strength, significantly decrease after a diagnosis of lung cancer, according to a study published in Supportive Care in Cancer.
Data from previous studies show that physical exercise improves fatigue, physical capacity, and quality of life for patients with cancer, but physical fitness and exercise behaviors have not been thoroughly assessed in patients with advanced lung cancer.
For this study, researchers enrolled 227 patients with advanced lung cancer shortly after diagnosis and tested for strength and endurance with the maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) and 6-minute walk test (6MWT), respectively. Baseline measures were taken upon study enrollment and randomization, and patients completed self-report questionnaires that evaluated current and previous exercise behaviors. Two hundred and eleven patients were evaluable for the final analysis.
The authors concluded that these “findings indicate the need for supporting patients with advanced lung cancer to remain physically active after receiving a cancer diagnosis and beginning palliative treatment.”

Using a inhouse developed technology and modern RNA sequencing, the researchers identified 570 long noncoding RNA molecules that are expressed differently depending on the type of cancer, as well as 633 new independent biomarkers that can be used to predict and treat 14 types of cancer. The results are expected to be important for cancer researchers in many parts of the world."
Since there is a strong link between cell division cycle and cancer, we are using it as the basis for identifying the important long non-coding RNA molecules that play a key role in cancer growth. Higher expression of some of these long noncoding RNA molecules during cell division cycle may cause cells to divide uncontrollably to become cancerous, explains Chandrasekhar Kanduri."
This link is known, but no one has made such a broad and extensive analysis previously, nor examined long noncoding RNAs so specifically," he continues.
The mouse models carrying human lung cancer tissues were injected with a substance (lock nucleic acid modified antisense oligonucleotides, LNA-ASO) that blocked the function of relevant long noncoding RNA molecule. Antisense oligonucleotides were injected twice a week and in 15 days, and the size of the tumors had decreased by almost half.
"Thus we have identified a new method, optimized it in a lab environment, and identified long noncoding RNA molecules that are involved in uncontrolled cell division. By taking aim at these specific molecules, we have reduced cancer growth. Furthermore, the molecules can also be used to predict the disease," says Chandrasekhar Kanduri.
"We are proposing that this RNA-based method be used to treat lung cancer, for which the survival rate after five years is currently only 18 percent," he continues. "We need to conduct more studies to see if there is potential to carry out clinical trials in patients, but we believe there is a future for RNA-based treatment in the treatment of cancer."-eurekalert.org
Lung cancer is the most common cancer globally, with 1.8 million new cases diagnosed worldwide in 2012 (the most up-to-date figures available). Although 58% of new cases were in developing countries, the disease is a widespread problem – 45000 people are diagnosed with it annually in the UK, 230000 in the US and 125000 in Australia.
Making matters worse, over the last few decades, patient survival has barely improved In 1971-1972, the chance of surviving for 10 years after diagnosis was just 3%. By 2010-2011, 5%. Over the same period, breast cancer death rates declined by34%.
A common view of lung cancer is that it is self-inflicted by smoking – and that the problem will eventually disappear when everyone gives up the habit. But aside from the fact that none of this helps former or current smokers who currently have the disease, there are two major flaws with this thinking.
First, lung cancer cases aren’t declining across the board.The gender gap is one obvious example. More men than women still are diagnosed with lung cancer.
Michael J. Uvanni of Rome, N.Y., sits in one of his two interior design business showrooms in April 2017. Uvanni said his brother may have gotten more time from the many drugs he tried during his illness but that his quality of life was mostly terrible.
After Michael Uvanni’s older brother, James, was diagnosed with a deadly form of skin cancer, it seemed as if everyone told the family what they wanted to hear: Have hope. You can beat this, and we are here to help.
The brothers met with doctors at a half-dozen of the country’s best hospitals, all with impressive credentials that inspired confidence.
Michael Uvanni was in awe when he visited the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, one of the world’s most respected cancer hospitals. It was like seeing the Grand Canyon, said Uvanni, 66, of Rome, N.Y. “You never get used to the size and scope.”
Even the MD Anderson logo on buses and buildings — with “Cancer” crossed out in red, above the words “Making cancer history” — made the family’s battle seem winnable.
“I thought they were going to save him,” said Uvanni, an interior designer.
Patients and families are bombarded with the news that the country is winning the war against cancer. The news media hypes research results to attract readers. Drug companies promise “a chance to live longer” to boost sales. Hospitals woo paying customers with ads that appeal to patients’ fears and hopes.
“I’m starting to hear more and more that we are better than I think we really are,” said Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer at the American Cancer Society. “We’re starting to believe our own bullshit.”
The consequences are real — and they can be deadly. Patients and their families have bought into treatments that either don’t work, cost a fortune or cause life-threatening side effects.
“We have a lot of patients who spend their families into bankruptcy getting a hyped therapy that [many] know is worthless,” Brawley said. Some choose a medicine that “has a lot of hype around it and unfortunately lose their chance for a cure.”
Although scientists have made important strides in recent years, and many early-stage cancers can now be cured, most of those with advanced cancer eventually die of their disease.
For Uvanni, hope gave way to crushing disappointment when his brother’s health declined and he died from metastatic melanoma in 2014.
“You get your hopes up, and then you are dropped off the edge of a cliff,” said Uvanni. “That’s the worst thing in the world.”
Caregivers like Uvanni can suffer prolonged grief and guilt if their loved ones are riddled with side effects and don’t survive as long as the family expected, noted Holly Prigerson, co-director of the Center for Research on End-of-Life Care at Weill Cornell Medical College.
For decades, researchers have rolled out new cancer therapies with great fanfare, announcing that science has at last found a key to ending one of the world’s great plagues, said Dr. Vinay Prasad, an assistant professor of medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. When such efforts fail to live up to expectations, the cancer world simply moves on to the next big idea.
Hyping early scientific results — based on lab tests or animal studies — can attract investors that allow researchers to continue their work. Positive results can lead biotech firms to be bought out by larger drug companies.
“It’s in the interest of almost every stakeholder in the health system to be optimistic about these therapies,” said Dr. Walid Gellad, co-director of the Center for Pharmaceutical Policy and Prescribing at the University of Pittsburgh.
Uvanni says his brother may have gotten more time from the many drugs he tried during his illness but that his quality of life was mostly terrible.
Of course, there is plenty of money to be made.
The U.S. spent nearly $88 billion treating cancer in 2014, with patients paying nearly $4 billion out-of-pocket, according to the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. Spending on cancer, a disease that most afflicts the aging, is predicted to soar as people live longer.
“While many people are trying to make patients’ lives healthier and longer and better, there are others that are exploiting their vulnerability,” said Dr. Leonard Saltz, chief of the gastrointestinal oncology service at New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Others argue that the excitement about cancer research is justified. A spokeswoman for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, an industry group, said cancer patients have good reason for optimism.
“We continue to see great strides in identifying the genetic mutations and related factors that can drive the seemingly random formation of abnormal cells in cancer,” spokeswoman Holly Campbell said in a statement. “In the last decade, we’ve seen a number of scientific advances transform the landscape of many cancers.”
Promises To Cure Abound
Even the country’s top scientists sometimes get carried away.
In 1998, Nobel laureate James Watson — who co-discovered the structure of DNA — told The New York Times that scientists would “cure cancer in two years” using drugs that block tumor blood supplies. At that time, the drugs had succeeded only in mice.
In 2003, the director of the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach,announced a goal of “eliminating suffering and death due to cancer by 2015” by better understanding tumor genetics.
Last year, when President Barack Obama announced the Cancer Moonshot, which aims to accelerate and better coordinate research, he said, “Let’s make America the country that cures cancer once and for all.”
In a recent interview, von Eschenbach acknowledged he didn’t communicate his goal well.
“We all fall into that trap,” said von Eschenbach, now a senior fellow at the Milken Institute, a health and public policy think tank. “We’re offering what we have, but making it appear that it’s more than what it is.”
It’s easy to see how patients’ hopes are raised, said Timothy Turnham, former executive director at the Melanoma Research Foundation, an advocacy group. Researchers are frequently overly enthusiastic about early discoveries that have little chance of leading to a new drug.
“There is a disconnect between what researchers think is statistically significant and what is really significant for patients,” Turnham said. “Patients hear ‘progress,’ and they think that means they’re going to be cured.”
A Marketing Blitz
Uvanni said his brother’s experience was nothing like the sunny images in TV commercials, in which smiling cancer patients hug their grandchildren, hike in the mountains and lead dance classes.
A TV commercial for the Bristol-Myers Squibb drug Opdivo projects the words “a chance to live longer” on the side of skyscrapers, as a captivated crowd looks on. In much smaller type, a footnote reveals that lung cancer patients taking Opdivo lived just 3.2 months longer than others.
A TV ad for Merck’s Keytruda features reassuring images of a smiling, healthy patient hugging her family — not fighting for breath or struggling to walk. Although the commercial notes that the people in the ad are portrayed by actors, the commercial claims the drug provides “a chance for a longer life. It’s Tru.”
“Your heart sinks when you see those ads,” Uvanni said. Seeing the family depicted in the ad, he said “makes you wonder if they’re going down the same path that we did.”
The Keytruda ad notes that 71 percent of patients given the drug were alive “at the time of patient follow-up,” compared with 58 percent of those who received chemotherapy. The ad doesn’t mention that the “time of follow-up” was 11 months.
“It’s not false; it’s just incomplete,” said pharmacist Harold DeMonaco, a visiting scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. “They don’t give patients or the patients’ family enough information to make a reasonable decision.”
In an interview, Merck senior vice president Jill DeSimone said that the company aims to be responsible with its advertising, noting that the Keytruda ad reminds patients to talk to their doctors. “The physician is the ultimate decider on treatment,” DeSimone said.
In a statement, Bristol-Myers’ senior vice president Teresa Bitetti said that Opdivo ads play “an important role in educating patients about new treatment options and fostering informed conversations between patients and their doctors.”
Hospitals also have drawn criticism for overstating their success in treating cancer. In 1996, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, a for-profit chain, settledallegations from the Federal Trade Commission that “they made false and unsubstantiated claims in advertising and promoting their cancer treatments.”
The company’s current commercials — dozens of which are featured on their website — boast of offering “genomic testing” and “precision cancer treatment.”
The commercials don’t tell patients that these tests — which aim to pair cancer patients with drugs that target the specific mutations in their tumors — are rarely successful, Prasad said. In clinical trials, these tests have matched only 6.4 percent of patients with a drug, according to Prasad’s 2016 article in Nature. Because these drugs only manage to shrink a fraction of tumors, Prasad estimates that just 1.5 percent of patients actually benefit from precision oncology.
In a statement, Cancer Treatment Centers of America said, “We use national media to help educate cancer patients and their families about the latest diagnostic tools and treatment options. … All of our advertising undergoes meticulous review for clinical accuracy as well as legal approval to ensure we tell our story in an informative and responsible manner, and in compliance with federal guidelines.”
Spending on ads for hospitals that treat cancer soared 220 percent from $54 million in 2005 to $173 million in 2014, according to a 2016 article in JAMA Internal Medicine. Ads for Cancer Treatment Centers of America accounted for nearly 60 percent of all total cancer center advertising.
Targeting Melanoma
For more than a decade, the Food and Drug Administration approved no new treatments for metastatic melanoma. Patients typically died within a year of diagnosis.
Since 2011, however, the FDA has approved 11 new treatments, including several immunotherapies, which aim to harness the immune system to fight cancer. Last year, doctors leading a clinical trial announced that the median survival of patients taking the drug Keytruda had grown to two years. Though, he also found that pre-cancerous alterations developed in the lungs, but it often did not lead to cancer.
“In human studies of long-term marijuana users, we found widespread pre-cancerous changes on the lungs,” Tashkin said.
“That doesn’t mean that if you have these changes you will develop lung cancer. But if it’s there you are at an increased risk of doing so.”
According to Tashkin, who has co-authored numerous studies on the impact of marijuana on the lungs over the past 30 years, has even re-analyzed his own data, he only found an increased risk of lung cancer in heavy smokers in a small number of patients. The number was so small that Tashkin didn’t believe it could be used as firm evidence to support the conclusion that pot could cause cancer.

Vitamin D has received a lot of attention in recent years, and a diet high in vitamin D may have some benefit for people with lung cancer as well.
Researchers observed non-small cell lung cancer cells containing an EGFR mutation, to see what effect vitamin D3 may have.4 The cells were treated with 25-hydroxyvitamin D3—the breakdown product of the vitamin which circulates in the blood. It was found that in this setting vitamin D3 inhibited the growth of lung cancer cells.
Vitamin D which is found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and herring appears to have other health benefits as well and a deficiency in vitamin D can lead to many medical problems. In addition to dietary sources, vitamin D can be absorbed outside from the sun, but sunscreen interferes with this process. Given its role in cancer, and how easy it is to know your level with a simple blood test, talk to your oncologist about having this tested.
Of all the vitamins and minerals in our diets, vitamin D may be the hardest to get in dietary form. Being outside in the sun in shorts and a T-shirt for 15 minutes, however, delivers a very healthy daily dose. That's not always possible in Northern climates (or for other reasons, such as chemotherapy drugs which raise the risk of a sunburn).
If your level of Vitamin D is low, your oncologist can talk about the best supplement to improve your level.
Ginger
Ginger may help with chemotherapy-induced nausea, but it may play an even bigger role for people living with lung cancer.
Ginger contains a compound 6-shogaol that may help prevent the development of lung cancer, but through its actions on the pathways that help cancer to spread, may lower the risk of metastases from a cancer already present.5 Evidence of the benefits of ginger were noted in treating lung cancer cells in the lab, and It was also found that dietary ginger intake reduced the risk of lung cancer metastases in mice with lung cancer. Since metastases are the leading cause of death for people with cancer, this is an important finding.
Ginger is thought to have other health benefits as well, particularly in helping people with chronic pain.5
Capers
Some people think of capers as pea shaped pickles, but these tiny flower buds—native to the Mediterranean and some parts of Asia—have much more to offer.
Capers are one of the highest known sources of a compound called quercetin, which is a powerful antioxidant that appears to inhibit the growth of several cancers, especially cancers of the lung, brain, blood, and salivary gland.
Quercetin inhibits a signaling pathway in lung cancer cells that is necessary for the cells to divide and multiply.6 Earlier studies found that in addition to inhibiting cancer cell growth, quercetin also plays a role in programmed cell death (apoptosis) of cancer cells.
Other foods rich in quercetin include dill weed, red onions, blueberries, apples, and green and black tea.6
Curry
Turmeric, an essential ingredient in curry among other foods, contains the compound curcumin. Turmeric is the spice that gives curry the yellow color. Curcumin has been found in several studies to inhibit the invasive ability of lung cancer cells.7
Curcumin has been looked at for some time with cancer, as it appears to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune stimulatory effects in addition to facilitating cell death (apoptosis) in cancer cells.
The American Cancer Society has stated that lab and animal tests on turmeric look very promising, but is hesitant to recommend this spice for prevention or treatment.
For those who are currently undergoing treatment for cancer, the news is good as well. Curcumin may work to make tumors more sensitive to the effects of treatment with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, especially with medications such as the common lung cancer chemotherapy drug cisplatin.
In addition to cancer prevention and treatment, turmeric is being studied for its role in a wide variety of health conditions, even its potential role in Alzheimer's disease.
Until that time, and since we are discussing dietary sources alone, it probably can't hurt to add a few foods containing this colorful spice to your diet. It's very important to note that relatively large quantities of curcumin supplements need to be taken in order to be absorbed. Three studies showed that at 1.8 grams of curcumin per day as a supplement, curcumin has very poor availability and is undetected in the blood of patients that receive it. On the other hand, when cooked as curry, curcumin has a better availability and is better absorbed.
Berries
Berries such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and cranberries are loaded with compounds known as anthocyanidins. One form of anthocyanidin known as delphinidin made a significant difference for mice inoculated with EGFR mutated human lung cancer cells.9 (If you are not familiar with EFGR or have not had molecular profiling done on your lung cancer, make sure to talk to your doctor.)
Dietary delphinidin inhibited the growth of the tumors, limited the ability of the tumors to create new blood vessels in order to expand (something known as angiogenesis) and induced cell death (apoptosis) among the cancer cells.
An added benefit are studies finding that anthocyanidins may help prevent the formation of blood clots (thrombosis). Considering that 3% to 15% of people with lung cancer develop blood clots and that this is associated with an increased rate of death from the disease, berries may help in more ways than one.8
Carrots
Carrots are an excellent source of a phytochemical known as chlorogenic acid. In order for tumors to grow and invade tissues, they must grow new blood vessels to supply the tumor. Some treatments for cancer are designed to interrupt this process which is called angiogenesis. In other words, if the tumor is unable to create a blood supply for itself, it cannot continue to expand.
Chlorogenic acid appears to disrupt a signaling pathway in lung cancer which is necessary in order for angiogenesis to occur.10
While carrots are very rich in this compound, it may also be found in significant quantities in flaxseed, apples, strawberries, potatoes, and pineapple.
Unlike some foods which can lose their protective phytochemicals during cooking, carrots are an exception to the rule.
The process of cooking—and even storing cooked carrots in the fridge for a day or two—may increase their nutritional value.9
Red Grape Juice
Resveratrol, a compound in red wine, has received a lot of attention in recent years, and for good reason.
Resveratrol, which is found in red wine, not only appears to lower the risk of developing several cancers but may work to help cancer treatments work better.
One of the problems with lung cancer treatment is that cancer cells have a mind of their own. The are "smart" if you will, and become resistant to treatments designed to eliminate them. Thankfully it's been found that compounds such as resveratrol may sensitize tumors to the effects of treatment.11 With lung cancer, an intake of this nutrient may help to improve the effectiveness of common chemotherapy medications such as Taxol (paclitaxel), Platinol (cisplatin), and Iressa (gefitinib). It's too soon to recommend using this as a "treatment adjuvant" but getting a little resveratrol in your diet isn't likely to hurt.
Of course, there is controversy in recommending an alcoholic beverage, but don't be worried. Red grape juice packs a powerful punch, as do other foods containing resveratrol such as dark chocolate and blueberries.
A snack of red grape juice, a few bits of dark chocolate, and a few blueberries could be a lovely dessert that may even quell the thought that you are eating a lung cancer-fighting diet.
Tomato Sauce
Tomatoes, and especially tomato sauces, contain lycopene, a potent compound for both reducing the risk of cancer and fighting it.
Lycopene works at several points in the progression of cancer.12 It may inhibit growth of tumors, interfere with the process in which lung cancer cells divide, inhibit the spread of cancer, and assist in ridding the body of cancer cells through apoptosis.
In addition, lycopene has antiinflammatory properties which may help lessen both the promotion and progression of lung cancer.
A study looking at over 100,000 people found that lung cancer was significantly less common among those who had a generous intake of foods containing lycopene.
Clearly, lycopene perform actions that hint it is a powerful cancer fighter11
Oysters
Oysters are a very rich source of the mineral zinc. Not only does this mineral appear to have a direct role in fighting lung cancer, but may stimulate the effect of the lung cancer chemotherapy drug Taxotere (docetaxel).13
For those who don't get enough zinc to begin with, it's important to know that zinc deficiency is associated with a decline in immunity—something very important for cancer patients.
It's hard finding good sources of zinc, and this was one study which looked at using a supplement instead of relying on dietary sources of a cancer-fighting nutrient. If you have a shellfish allergy it's best to pass by this by, but many enriched breakfast cereals contain a decent amount of zinc as well.12
Watercress
Watercress is an excellent source of isothiocyanates, compounds which not only interfere with the process of cancer cells dividing to inhibit tumor growth but seem to enhance the effect of radiation therapy in killing cancer cells.
In addition to watercress, this compound is present in other cruciferous vegetables such as wasabi, mustard greens, brussels sprouts, bok choy, kohlrabi, and cauliflower.
Flaxseed
From constipation to hot flashes, flaxseed is thought to have health benefits overall, but may play a role in cancer treatment as well. Flax has a component called lignans which may be responsible for these effects.15
Radiation therapy is known to cause plenty of side effects and is known to cause long-term side effects such as pulmonary fibrosis for people living with lung cancer. Researchers treated mice who were living with lung cancer to a diet of flax seed. They found that not only did the mice given flax seeds live longer, but a diet rich in flaxseed appeared to protect normal cells from being damaged while allowing or enhancing the death of cancer cells.
Try to make your meals an experience and a time of joy. Take the time to set a beautiful table. This may sound exhausting when you are in cancer treatment, but it can be a good opportunity to enlist those people who long to help in some way. Often times, family caregivers of people with cancer state that the hardest part of coping is the feeling of being helpless. Light some candles. Play music you love. Savor each moment while you dine. Those who have lived with cancer know that life is too short to do anything else.

From my own experience which i didn't impose on you because it didn't happened to me directly but to one of my friends. when he had lung cancer as a second-hand smokers, what they told him to use as home remedy is to mix small quantity of any white gin with yoghurt and be drinking it often.
And he said it works. He said that is the main thing that works for him. You can also do your own research about this before using it or recommending it for someone else. Is just part of what i heard, so am not directing anyone to use it without proper research on it.
I just feel oblige to put it in this book because if it works, it might be the main highlight of this book!!
