Causes, symptoms and treatment of uterine fibroid

Uterine fibroid is a non-cancerous tumour of the uterus and occur during the reproductive years of females. It is the common non-cancerous tumour in female as it occur in almost 50% of women.

Causes of uterine fibroids
Some of the factors that can lead to the development of fibroid are obesity, excessive
consumption of alcohol, hereditary, hypertension, race etc
Taking about the role of race. African women have greater chance of developing fibroid than their white counterpart. Fibroid usually occurs on white women above 30 to 40 years whereas younger African
women of about 20s can develop fibroid.low pregnancy or no pregnancy can also cause fibroid in women.

Types, symptoms and effect of fibroids

Intramural fibroids
These are fibroids which are located within the wall of the uterus. Very large intramural fibroids can enlongate the uterine cavity.

Effects
It can affect the reproductive functions of the womb. It can cause heavy menstrual flow or bleeding in-between menses.

Subserosal fibroids
These are fibroid located under the surface of the womb

Effects
It can enlarge into a long stalks (pendunculated fibroid) and some may get detached into the abdominal cavity ( parasitic fibroid ).

submucosal fibroids

These are those located just below the lining of womb.

Symptoms
It can cause serious bleeding, pains and heavy menstrual flow. Like subserosa fibroids, it can also hangs on stalks in the womb or protrude through the vaginal like a ball.

Effects
It may deform the endometral lining,.thus reduces fertility. This can result to early pregnancy loss popularly referred to as ‘ miscarriage.’

The general symptoms of Fibroids are abnormal bleeding When the fibroids are near the womb lining. This bleeding may cause intensive lower abdominal pain along with shortage of blood.
Fibroid can also cause frequent urinating or obstruction to urinating as a result of too much pressure on the bladder.
Fibroid can also cause pelvic pain and constipation. All in all, the sizes and location of fibroid are the major
determinants of symptoms as those within or near the uterine cavity may cause immediate pains and other symptoms while those outside them uterus, even large may be there for many years without any symptoms.

Fibroid diagnosis is usually done by pelvic examination or better still by ultra sound.

Relationship between fibroids, pregnancy, labour and delivery

The sizes and location of the Fibroid are threshold determining whether the fibroid will have effect on pregnancy and child delivery.
Fibroid positioned at the entrance of the womb may cause blockage. While very large fibroid can cause abnormal enlongation of the uterine cavity thus reduce fertility.
Fibroid has been linked with increased number of operative delivery and increase bleeding after delivery in such case where the fibroid has blocked the lower part of the uterus.
It can also cause other pregnancy complications such as abnormal position of the baby and bleeding in early pregnancy.

Treatment of fibroids

Medical
This is the use of medications to treat symptoms like intensive pains and menstrual flow and to shrink the fibroid.

Surgical
This can take place in two forms.

Myomectomy
This is the act of removing the fibroids through surgical operation. Some women whom their infertility was due to Fibroid have experienced in improvement in fertility after the removal of the uterine fibroid.

Hysterectomy
This is issually done in women who have stopped child bearing because the whole womb will be completely removed.
